Talk about HOT...

Nesting Yellow-crowned Night Herons (also called American Night Herons) pictured here, the young can't be more than a few days old.  This picture taken on 7/17/2010.

Today, 8/1/2010, these young herons are, HOT.   These three chicks were sitting in the nest panting in near 100 degree temperatures, you can imagine their discomfort.  I was only out there for 45 minutes and I was melting. . .
They are probably two - three weeks old.  At this point they have really wiry hair, with their heads barely covered.

Soon they will be filled out to resemble the adult pictured here, which was perched on a low branch close to the nest.

I will check on them again next week to see how fast they grow and change appearance.
